NEW! Premium PLA material now available
The premium PLA material is now available for use with the UP! range of 3D Printers. Available in three colours: Hawaii Blue Pompeii Grey Rio Green Price: £19 per 700g spool (1.75mm dia filament) + Delivery and VAT PLA - A 'green' alternative to ABS Polymer: Polylactic Acid (PLA) is made from fermented plant starch and is quickly becoming a popular biodegradable alternative to traditional petroleum-based polymers like ABS. PLA is harder than ABS, but is a more brittle. That doesn't mean that it will break easily - it is actually very strong and more likely to snap than bend. It also remains flexible for a short period of time as it cools. Additionally, PLA doesn't warp and lift on larger objects the way ABS can. Each type of polymer is better suited to different kinds of applications: ABS - Its strength, flexibility, machinability and higher temperature resistance often make it a preferred plastic for engineers, and industrial applications. PLA - The alternative colours and the glossy finish attract those who print for display or small household uses. It is therefore a popular plastic for home printers, hobbyists, and schools. *Points to note when printing with PLA on the UP Plus 2 and UP! Mini 3D Printers: Use the latest version of the UP! Software (2.11) It is not necessary to pre-heat the bed The print quality should not be set to “Fast” The UP! Mini door should be left open when printing with PLA
