Four decades of dedication, global connections, and a lifetime of stories - Julie’s journey reflects the evolution of Denford itself.

From Office Junior to Global Sales

Julie’s story at Denford began in 1985, when, aged just 17, she joined the business after completing a Youth Training Scheme at Marks and Spencer in Halifax.

At the time, Denford Machine Tools Ltd. was a very different place - with around 100 employees and Gerald Denford (Andrew’s father), known to all as Mr D, at the helm.

Starting as an Office Junior, Julie’s early responsibilities reflected the era. From managing telex messages to walking bags of post to the local post office each evening, her role offered a hands-on introduction to the business at a time before emails, internet, and modern systems.

Witnessing Change and Growth

Not long after Julie joined, the company faced a defining moment when Mr D sadly passed away after a brave battle with cancer. Andrew stepped into the role of Managing Director - a transition Julie experienced first-hand early in her career.

Today, she reflects on just how much has changed.

From manual typewriters and fax machines to computers, mobile phones and digital communication, Julie has seen every stage of Denford’s evolution - new premises, new machines, product development and the exciting introduction of F1 in Schools (now known as STEM Racing) which has become a key part of Denford’s work within education and STEM engagement across the globe.

“So much has happened in my time at Denford. It’s incredible to think I’m now working with the fourth generation of the family - Joe, Anabelle and Oscar,” she says.

A Career Across Continents

As Denford expanded into international markets, Julie’s role evolved with it.

She moved into international sales at just 22 - the start of a long and successful career working with customers all over the world.

Over the years, Julie has helped support sales into more than 100 countries, building relationships and gaining a global perspective that few roles can offer.

Following Covid, the UK and export sales teams combined once again, with Julie continuing to play a key role in supporting customers across both areas.

More Than Just a Workplace

For Julie, the most important part of her 40-year journey hasn’t just been the work - it’s been the people.

“When you work somewhere this long, it’s like having a second family. We’ve shared the happy and sad times, and the one thing I’m sure everyone would agree on is the love and support that’s there when it’s needed most.”

With countless stories, characters and moments along the way, Julie jokes that perhaps one day she’ll write a book - though maybe that’s best saved for retirement.

Outside Work

Outside of Denford, Julie is actively involved in her local Scouting community, where she contributes as a Group Lead, Section Volunteer and District Trustee.

She also enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, particularly going out for meals, and loves travelling abroad - especially since discovering a passion for cruises.

Still Going Strong

Despite reaching such a major milestone, Julie isn’t slowing down any time soon.

“So for the foreseeable future, I’ll still be here."
