Embracing project-based learning.

Turriff Academy

Background

Located in Aberdeenshire, Turriff Academy has embraced project-based learning as a core part of its curriculum.

With a strong focus on integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) across subjects, the Academy uses Denford Machines and the F1 in Schools initiative to provide students with an interdisciplinary and practical approach to learning.

The Academy benefits from using a wide range of Denford equipment, including:

Scott Hunter from the Academy, comments: “The equipment is excellent and also versatile, with the CNC machines being used across a number of projects and the wind tunnel being repurposed for a junior-year rocket project”.

Getting Involved In F1 in Schools

Scott has extensive experience with F1 in Schools, dating back to 2004. He adds: “Having coached teams to World Championship level, I introduced the program at Turriff Academy after joining in 2022. Recognising the potential of F1 in Schools to contextualise learning across subjects, the Academy integrated the initiative as a platform for project-based learning”.

Students from STEM, business, art, computing, and even modern languages collaborate on projects, reflecting the competition’s interdisciplinary nature.

Impact on the School

Participation in F1 in Schools brings excitement, engagement, and real-world context to learning. The program also helps develop valuable partnerships with industry, providing students with insights into potential career paths.

Skills Development

At Turriff, students gain a wealth of skills through their involvement in the programme, including:

  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Project management
  • Resilience and problem-solving
  • Communication and presentation

These skills, along with exposure to external engineering and technology applications, prepare students for future careers in STEM and beyond.

The Importance of STEM Education

Scott emphasises the critical role STEM plays in preparing students for the future, citing its relevance in the job market, global competitiveness, and everyday life. F1 in Schools enhances this learning by:

  • Making STEM tangible and exciting through practical applications.
  • Encouraging cross-disciplinary thinking and innovation.
  • Teaching teamwork, communication, and other transferable skills.
  • Inspiring students in career choice.

Conclusion

Turriff Academy’s partnership with Denford and its embrace of F1 in Schools illustrates the transformative power of STEM education.

By combining cutting-edge technology with hands-on learning, the Academy has created an inspiring environment that prepares students with the skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm to excel in an ever-evolving world.
